On August 12th, Popeyes added a new chicken sandwich to its menu nationwide. This new addition is said to be to the biggest product launch in 30 years for the popular fast food chain.
The chicken sandwich features crispy buttermilk battered chicken with a spicy Cajun spread and pickles with a toasted brioche bun.
This may have rubbed fast-food chains like Wendys, and Chick-fil-A the wrong way as they took subliminal shots at Popeyes. Popeyes was not shy either, as they were dishing it right back.
Twitter users followed suit, as the release of the new chicken sandwich caused mass hysteria amongst Twitter for the past few days. #ChickenSandwichTwitter chimed in to give their opinion of which chicken sandwich reigns supreme starting the great #chickenwars.
Twitter users played a big part in helping the marketing efforts for these fast-food chains.
What has been seen as mostly fun and playful actually resulted in a ton of marketing for Popeyes. Popeyes received the equivalent of $23.25 million in ad value in media mentions for their chicken sandwich in the first 11 days of its release from digital, newsprint, radio, TV, and social.
Wendy’s just recently had the internet in a frenzy as well when they broke the news that the fan-favorite spicy chicken nuggets would be making a comeback.
