In a previous blog post, we discussed Britney Spears’ conservatorship and the #FreeBritney movement.
Since then, multiple court hearings have taken place, shocking revelations have been made, and social media efforts were amplified.
With worldwide attention on the case and support from millions of her fans, Britney finally had the courage to speak up and discuss the abusive conservatorship in detail at a Los Angeles County Superior Court hearing on June 23.
“I just want my life back,” the 39-year-old pop star said. Her father, Jamie Spears, not only controlled her financial and business affairs, he also controlled her medical and personal decisions under the conservatorship. Britney told the judge she was medicated against her will, forced to work, and denied basic rights such as getting married, having another child, and even driving her own car.
After her emotional testimony, more than one million tweets were posted about Britney’s conservatorship in just 24 hours, including tweets from celebrity supporters Elon Musk, Madonna, Cher, and Mariah Carey.
Finally, there was hope for Britney. After 13 years of controlling her life, Britney’s father announced on August 12 he would step down as her conservator. Britney thanked her fans through an Instagram post.
On September 29, Los Angeles Judge Brenda Penny replaced Jamie Spears with attorney John Zabel as the new conservator of Britney’s estate, as requested by Britney through her lawyer. The conservatorship will likely be officially terminated at her next hearing on November 12.
Britney continues to share how the #FreeBritney movement helped her get through this difficult time in her Instagram posts, stating, “The #FreeBritney movement has given me strength in finding confidence … my voice … and my sword … THANK YOU !!!!” She was also excited to share that she finally has the keys to her own car after 13 long years.
The #FreeBritney movement is an amazing example of how powerful social media is and the positive impact it can make. Britney has been vindicated and the #FreeBritney movement has triumphed.
